The Instrument That Replaced a Century of Guesswork
Before the 1980s, mapping a plot of land meant a surveyor hunched over a plane table, drawing directly onto paper at a fixed scale. Get the scale wrong, or need a bigger area later, and there was no fixing it. You started over. The total station ended that problem in one stroke, by turning survey measurement into pure digital data instead of ink on paper.
A total station is, at its core, a digital theodolite fused with an electronic distance meter (EDM) and a small onboard computer. It measures two angles and one distance from where it stands to any point you aim at, then calculates that point's exact coordinates automatically. No manual trigonometry, no transcription errors, no guesswork.
What's Actually Inside It
Strip away the branding and every total station does the same three jobs: measure a horizontal angle, measure a vertical angle, and measure a slope distance to a target. A built-in processor then converts those three raw numbers into easting, northing, and elevation, the coordinates that go straight into your survey drawing.

PLANE TABLE ERA

Why Crew Size Shrank
Digital readouts eliminated the reading errors that came from squinting at an optical theodolite scale, and electronic data collectors removed the transcription errors of copying numbers into a field book by hand. Between the two, most land survey crews dropped from three people to two, sometimes with a third added back only when speed matters more than crew cost.
Common Questions
Not quite. A theodolite only measures angles. A total station adds an EDM for distance measurement and a processor to calculate coordinates, all in one housing.
Electronic Distance Meter. It sends a signal, usually infrared or laser, to a prism and calculates distance from the time or phase shift of the return signal.
Because the light path between the instrument and the true center of the prism is not identical to the measured path. Get the prism constant wrong, and every single distance reading carries the same fixed error, often larger than any other error source combined.
