Why the First 5 Minutes Decide the Whole Survey
Every survey error you will ever chase down on a total station job traces back to one of two things: a bad setup, or a bad back sight. Everything downstream, angles, distances, coordinates, inherits whatever error was baked in during those first few minutes of leveling and centering the instrument. Get this step wrong, and no amount of careful measurement afterward can fix it.
Leveling and centering feel almost too simple to matter this much. Screw the tripod legs into the ground, spin three foot screws until a bubble sits in the middle, check a tiny plummet mark, done. But the tolerance is unforgiving: rough centering needs to land within about 1 centimetre of the true point, and fine leveling needs to hold through every rotation of the instrument.

The Real Sequence, Step by Step
Rough Position the Tripod
Stretch the legs, set the head roughly level and roughly over the point, chest height to the operator's eye.
Push Legs In Firmly
Apply weight along each leg, not bent sideways, so the tripod won't shift once you start fine adjustments.
Fine Level With Foot Screws
Rotate the instrument through four positions 90ยฐ apart, adjusting opposing screws each time until the bubble holds centered in all directions.
Check the Plummet
Use the optical or laser plummet to confirm the instrument sits within about 1cm of the actual ground point. If it doesn't, translate the tripod, not rotate it, and re-level.
Rotate 180ยฐ and Recheck
If the plummet drifts off-center after a half rotation, the tribrach needs adjustment before you trust a single reading from this setup.
Why This Step Gets Skipped, and Why It Shouldn't
On a busy site, the temptation is to rush setup and get to measuring. But every angle you read afterward is only as accurate as the axis this setup created. A total station that's off level by even a small amount introduces a systematic tilt error into every single vertical angle reading for the rest of that setup, an error that no amount of repeat measurement will average away, because it isn't random. It's baked in.
