How Survey Accuracy is Verified: Understanding RMSE and QC Checks
Any survey report can claim "high accuracy." Very few actually prove it with independent verification. Understanding how accuracy is genuinely measured and checked helps you tell the difference between a survey you can trust and one that simply states a number without evidence behind it.
What RMSE Actually Means
Root Mean Square Error is the standard statistical measure used to express survey accuracy. It is calculated by comparing measured coordinates against known reference coordinates at a set of check points, then computing the average magnitude of the differences. A lower RMSE means the survey data matches ground truth more closely.
