How Survey Accuracy is Verified: Understanding RMSE and QC Checks

Any survey report can claim "high accuracy." Very few actually prove it with independent verification. Understanding how accuracy is genuinely measured and checked helps you tell the difference between a survey you can trust and one that simply states a number without evidence behind it.

What RMSE Actually Means

Root Mean Square Error is the standard statistical measure used to express survey accuracy. It is calculated by comparing measured coordinates against known reference coordinates at a set of check points, then computing the average magnitude of the differences. A lower RMSE means the survey data matches ground truth more closely.

Why RMSE, not just "average error" RMSE gives more weight to larger errors than a simple average would. This makes it a more honest reflection of overall data quality, since it penalizes outlier mistakes more heavily than a straightforward average error calculation.

Questions to Ask Any Survey Provider

Were independent check points used?
Points used only to build the model do not verify accuracy. Only points withheld from processing and used purely for comparison give genuine verification.
Is the RMSE figure documented in the report?
A credible survey report includes the check point data and calculated RMSE, not just a stated accuracy claim without supporting evidence.
How many check points were used?
More check points, well distributed across the site, give a more statistically reliable accuracy figure than just one or two points.

Every project we deliver includes documented QC data with real check point comparisons, not just a stated accuracy number. If you want to understand the accuracy behind a specific project, ask us directly and we will walk you through it.
